Back on May 29th, the garden looked like this:
And now on June 26th, less than 1 month later, it looks like this:
| Zucchini starting to form |
| And Summer Squash too |
| Sugar Snap Peas in peak form |
Planted directly into last year's compost pile, this Sungold cherry tomato plant is already over 5 ft tall! |
In between there were some scares:
A bug I had never seen before, these Tortoise Beetles are cute but eat through potato and tomato leaves. The boys and I hand-picked them each day for a week or so off the plants and that pretty much took care of them - no (real) damage done. |
Over 8 inches of rain in 3 days (including 6 inches in 24 hr period) left the garden area flooded, and a panicked Farmer Benny Boy fearing that the garden wouldn't recover. Fortunately, it survived the storm and a few sunny days later was back to normal. I have one or two of these (usually) unnecessary garden panics every year, but the garden (usually) proves pretty resilient. The raised beds definitely helped this year though! |
The water level was actually a few inches higher right after the storm, this was taken a couple days later after much of the water had sunk in. |
But mostly fun:
| Daddy helps the boys plant their tomato plant in Ethan's garden |
All by himself and without any prompting, Ethan raked his garden area clean and made a compost pile "just like Daddy's" by collecting dried leaves from the woods and mixing in our kitchen food scraps. I couldn't have been more proud! |
| Ethan was pretty proud of himself too! |
And, of course, enjoying our harvest:
The arugula is mostly buried under the beets and goat cheese but we've had 4 (I think) of these delicious salads so far this season and a couple others of just arugula. We've also had 10 (or more) lettuce salads so far (not pictured) and the lettuce is still going strong (arugula nearing the end, but I will plant more soon). |
First meal of sugar snap peas (with some broccoli side shoots (also from the garden) sprinkled in) - yum! |
